The Czech Republic - a landlocked country located in Central Europe. Between 1918 and 1939 and between 1945 and 1993 the country was a part of Czechoslovakia. As of May, 1, 2004 the Czech Republic is a member of the European Union.

Population:

The Czech Republic has over 10 million inhabitants. The official language is Czech.

Location:

Central Europe, between Germany, Poland, Slovikia, and Austria

Economy:

The Czech Republic is one of the most stable and prosperous of the post-Communist states of Central and Eastern Europe. Growth in 2000-2008 was supported by exports to the EU, primarily to Germany, and a strong recovery of foreign and domestic investment. The current account deficit has declined to around 3% of GDP as demand for automotive and other products from the Czech Republic remains strong in the European Union. Rising inflation from higher food and energy prices are a risk to balanced economic growth. The government withdrew a 2010 target date for euro adoption and instead aims to meet the euro area (eurozone) criteria around 2012.

The Czech Republic’s global merchandise trade relationships:

  • Export destinations: Germany, Slovakia, Poland
  • Import destinations: Germany, China, Poland

Cuisine:

The Czech cuisine, despite huge influence of other countries’ cuisine (Hungarian, Austrian and German), still bases on traditional recipes. Simple ingredients are a base for delicious and inventive dishes which can be found only in the Czech cuisine. They are knedlíky (boiled sliced dumplings), a wide variety of gravies and soups, marinated beef sirloin (svíčková na smetaně) and roast pork with dumplings and cabbage (vepřo knedlo zelo). Beer is considered a national beverage by the Czechs. There are over 470 types of beer in the Czech market at the moment.
